For this reason, today’s workout focused on a interval session on the track: a 5x400m followed by a final 600m, totaling 2,600 meters of specific work.
The primary goal was not to push for absolute limits, but rather to focus on running mechanics, mechanical efficiency, and aerobic stimulation while managing a controlled level of circulating lactic acid.
Workout Structure and Recovery Physiology
The session consisted of 5 reps of 400 meters run at a crisp and consistent pace, separated by a 2-minute active recovery performed by light jogging. To close out the block, a final 600m was added after the rest period to introduce further lactate load and test fatigue resistance.
Opting for an active jogging recovery instead of stopping complete standing still stems from a precise physiological choice. Lactate produced during high-intensity intervals is not merely a metabolic waste product, but a vital source of energy (Lactate Shuttle). Continuous light movement maintains elevated blood flow and proper oxygenation, prompting oxidative muscle fibers to capture circulating lactate, reconvert it, and reuse it as fuel for the subsequent rep, accelerating clearance while conditioning the body to manage acidosis.
